A headache is a common and distressing pain or discomfort that is experienced in the head or upper neck area. It can vary in intensity, duration, and underlying causes. Headaches can be categorized into several types based on their characteristics:
- Tension Headache: The most common type of headache, often described as a dull, aching pain that feels like a tight band around the head. It is usually triggered by stress, muscle tension, or poor posture.
- Migraine: A severe headache that often occurs with other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances (auras). Migraines are thought to involve changes in blood flow to the brain and may have genetic factors.
- Cluster Headache: Intensely painful headaches that tend to occur in clusters, usually on one side of the head. They are often accompanied by symptoms like a runny or congested nose and are more common in men.
- Sinus Headache: Often associated with sinus infections or allergies, this type of headache is characterized by pain and pressure in the forehead, cheeks, and around the eyes.
- Chronic Daily Headache: Defined as having a headache for 15 or more days a month for at least three months, this type can include chronic tension-type headaches and chronic migraines.
If you have a headache that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms, such as fever, stiff neck, or neurological problems, it is important to see a doctor to rule out a serious underlying medical condition.
