Portico Valve

« Back to Glossary Index

The Portico Valve is a type of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) device used in the treatment of aortic stenosis. Aortic stenosis is a condition where the aortic valve narrows, reducing blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body.

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure where the damaged aortic valve is replaced with a new valve without the need for open heart surgery. The Portico Valve is delivered to the heart through a small incision in the leg or chest and is designed to replace the damaged valve, restoring normal blood flow.

The Portico Valve is made by Abbott Laboratories and of a combination of biological tissue and a metal frame, which provides a durable and long-lasting solution for aortic stenosis. The device is designed for patients who are at intermediate or high risk for conventional surgical aortic valve replacement.
